[241] Startup error: Unable to initialize error reporting system (reason: Access is denied)

In SQL Server 2000, while updating SQL agent account to run under Domain account, recieved following error, (SQL services started successfully but agent gave error),

2011-12-xx 19:17:15 – ! [241] Startup error: Unable to initialize error reporting system (reason: Access is denied)
2011-12-xx 19:17:15 – ? [098] SQLServerAgent terminated (normally)

On search found following useful article link which helped in fixing the issue, I followed following steps to resolve it,

As per article, this issue occurs when your domain account is part of ‘Guests group’ under ‘local users and groups’, so
1. I went to ‘local users and groups’ by going to Start > Run > type ‘lusrmgr.msc’
2. ‘local users and groups’ MMC console will open up
3. Go to ‘Groups’ > select ‘Guests’ and double click
4. In ‘Members’, check if domain account is present or super group of domain account is present, in case ‘Yes’, remove that account from ‘Guests’
5. Now start SQL Agent under domain account it should start (at least worked for me 😉 )

Weird! 😀
