Dedicated administrator connections not supported. (ObjectExplorer)

When you try to connect to SQL Server using SSMS by giving connection string as ADMIN:<Servername>\<Instancename> you get following error,

i.e. Dedicated administrator connections not supported. (ObjectExplorer)

Now you have already verified that your DAC is enabled in SQL Server Surface Area Configuration, it is already listening on some <port no> (you can verify from SQL error logs that which port it is using) etc. but still why the error?

The answer is, this is feature error which means SSMS object explorer doesn’t support this feature.

Solution:

You can still connect using sqlcmd or through SSMS by doing this,

With sql server management studio, you can connect dedicated administrator connection (DAC) only via query window and not object explorer. What it means is on the right top side of SSMS click on new query and then enter ADMIN:<Server Name>\<Instance Name>. This will go through.

Problem is when you open SSMS, it prompts for connection, DONT use that window to connect. Cancel that prompt and use the above steps mentioned above.

Hope it helps!
