Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 58

Today while troubleshooting a SQL authentication issue, came across following error:

Login failed for user ‘sa’. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 58) When I use SQL Server Authentication to connect server.

This was authentication issue, hence first checked the authentication mode and found that it is configured as Windows Authentication instead of Mixed mode (SQL + Windows) authentication

Once I modified the authentication mode to mixed mode, it requested me to restart SQL services, I did that, and it resolved the issue.

Not a great learning but this is one off case where Microsoft should incorporate a way that no new SQL login creation should be allowed if windows authetication is selected, I am not sure whether this can be put into bug category or not, but certainly it creates confusion when you are allowed to create something which will not work!
